Lend Your Expertise to the Next Generation

Lend Your Expertise to the Next Generation: How and Why You Should Become a Mentor at SMU Dedman School of Law

SMU’s Dedman School of Law is ranked in the Top 50 Law Schools across the country and has a one-of-a-kind mentorship program, The Mustang Exchange. The Mustang Exchange connects each law student with a mentor to guide them through the next stages of their legal career. All areas of law are offered, with mentors’ expertise ranging from criminal litigation, and family law, as well as nonprofit work.

There is not a required amount of time that a mentor must commit to, but rather be available for information talks, resume advice, and sharing your experience in the world of law. One of the biggest impacts mentors can have is allowing students to shadow them on casework, attend hearings, and understand the day-to-day expectations of a lawyer.

As a mentor, you are able to set the tone for how your mentorship will progress and can choose whether you would prefer to meet in person or online with the student. Mentorship is one of the best ways to help guide the next class of lawyers and is an invaluable experience for these students. You will serve as a role model, develop communication and interpersonal skills, and gain new perspectives, all of which are valuable in various areas of your life.
