Fall Time in Dallas: From Outdoor Activities to Community Service
Ways to Serve and Be Active in Dallas This Fall
As we enter the holiday season, there’s a renewed focus on being thankful and expressing gratitude. Whether it is time with family and friends, serving our communities, or a combination of the two, we can find opportunities across the Dallas area to do just that.
Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden
This year marks the 10th Anniversary of the holiday exhibit that started with the holiday gazebos and has expanded to acres of decorated gardens. The Arboretum is enjoyable to tour both during the day, with views of floral arrangements and White Rock Lake, and in the evening, with trees covered in thousands of lights. Live, seasonal music performances and special tours of the historic DeGolyer House are available into January.

Turkey Trot
If you like some fresh air and outdoor activity before diving into Thanksgiving meals, then the 57th Annual Dallas YMCA Turkey Trot is for you! Race day choices include a 5K and an 8-mile course. Many of the 18,000+ participants dress up in Thanksgiving-themed outfits, and it is a very fun morning to walk, race, or cheer from the sidelines. All proceeds go to directly to the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas, in support of programs and initiatives benefitting the connected communities.

Community Service
There are many local area nonprofits who count on volunteers to help make an impact on the Dallas metroplex and its communities. Some have calendars that offer service opportunities all year long, and others set up special events and donation drives around Thanksgiving and into the holiday season. North Texas Food Bank, VNA Meals on Wheels, and Austin Street Center are a few examples of organizations that welcome participation from groups and families.
There are countless positive aspects to getting out and about, spending time in nature, or pitching in with community service. Whether it be on your own, or with a group, it’s a way to gain a fresh or renewed perspective on the holiday season.
