Marketing Yourself in 2023

Marketing Yourself in 2023: How to Put Yourself in the Best Position Within a New Generation

Become Relevant

While it may sound a bit odd, staying relevant is pivotal when pitching yourself in this day and age. It is no longer about knowing what the company you’re interested in is working on, but rather understanding the market as a whole and bringing new ideas. Know the market inside and out, not just what it has done in the past but expected trends for the future that you can implement.

Know Your Audience

More likely than not, when you are seeking new business, you are looking for a younger business or individual that is untapped. Younger audiences, especially the Gen Z generation, have an extremely short attention span, so you need to make your pitch and make it quick. Short attention span has also contributed to a generation of visual learners, focusing more on your delivery and how presentable it can be rather than loading up on a long speech that may spark a loss of interest quickly.

Look for Speaking Opportunities and Become and Expert

It pays to be known, educate yourself on a topic and find ways to become relevant in that particular field. Ideally, if a company searches a specific topic, your name pops up as a top result. Creating credibility for yourself is an efficient and cheap way to make yourself marketable.

Don’t be Shy

While it may not be fair, who you know may be more important than what you know at times. It is no longer realistic to submit an application or interest form and expect to immediately be considered for a position. People at that company need to know you and need to know your work. Use social media tools such as LinkedIn to gain a better understanding of a company’s culture and what they are looking for in order to best integrate yourself. You just need one person to recognize your name, so interact with the company’s LinkedIn feed, make some friends and don’t be afraid to reach out.
