1. What inspired you to start your own law firm?
“I have been an associate in a Houston firm. While there, my “15 minutes of fame” was that I represented NBA Hall of Famer, Hakeem Olajuwon. Then, I was recruited to become a partner in a Dallas firm. Later, I became a partner in 2 other Dallas firms. The last one did not work out, so 18 years ago I decided to take my book of clients and start my own firm. Best decision I made.”
2. What kind of law do you practice? Why did you want to go into that area?
“For the past 20 years, about 65% of my practice has been representing people from all of the U.S. who have been victims in all sorts of investment scams….oil and gas, real estate, purchase of alleged valuable paintings, etc.
I began representing people who were victims of investment frauds because of one case. Approximately 18 years ago, I was asked to take over a case from another attorney regarding a securities (oil and gas) scam. I obtained a 7-figure judgment as a result of my motion for a summary judgment. The Dallas Morning News interviewed me on that case, ran an article on that case and expressed that I was an expert in oil and gas fraud matters (I never represented I was such an expert!). A few weeks later, the brothers and father of the person I secured the 7-figure judgment against were indicted by the DOJ. Again, the Dallas Morning News contacted me for my comment on that indictment. Months later, Time and Forbes magazines contacted me to get my input on these scams. It was then I realized that investment frauds could be a niche to develop. I did so.
The rest of my practice is representing corporations as counsel for plaintiffs and defendants.”
3. What do you wish someone had told you before starting your own practice?
“The stress of securing new clients.”
4. What makes your practice different from others?
“Ego aside, since I’ve been engaged in securities litigation for as long as I have (I think I’ve learned a thing or two about that area of the law), approximately 95% of the attorneys I go against do not understand the nuances of securities law. As a result, post discovery nearly every case is settled without a trial. Additionally, preparation, preparation and more preparation.”
5. What will your practice look like in 5 years?
“I hope to be retired before that. However, in the interim, I will continue to represent the clients like I have been doing so.”
6. Have you ever worked from exclusively home (i.e., no other office to go to, except perhaps for a virtual office) If so, what did you like about that location/situation? What did you most dislike?
“No.”
